about the caucus
What Do We Do?
Any caucus of the California Young Democrats is tasked with taking their specific issue area and representing it within the CYD structure. They are a branch of the CYD and function to handle their area on behalf of it. The CYD Veterans Caucus works to provide a strong voice and representation within the CYD structure for Veterans; promote the welfare of Veterans through effective legislation; and encourage Young Veterans to participate fully as Democrats at all levels of policy-making and public service.
Who Are We?
We are the Veterans of the great State of California who are also Democrats, under the age of 36. We come from all areas of the state and all branches of the services. We are united here for the purpose of going further than the non-profit organizations who serve our Veterans can, by crossing political barriers and ensuring that those running for and elected to office are well aware of Veterans needs.
Joining the Caucus is easy. You only have to be a registered Democrat in the State of California, be 35 years of age or younger, and pay your dues or be granted an economic hardship waiver. Our membership consists of both Veterans and those who believe in supporting Veterans and their issues within the CYD.
How Are We Organized?
This Caucus operates within the by-laws of the Young Democrats of America, California Young Democrats and under our own bylaws. Our Leadership Team is comprised of our officers: a Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer-Recorder, and Parliamentarian. Officers are elected at the Caucus meeting during odd-numbered years at the meeting held in conjunction with the California Young Democrats' convention.
When Do We Meet?
Regular CYD Veterans Caucus meetings coincide with the annual California Young Democrats Convention and other gatherings of the CYD. These caucus meetings are open to all members of the CYD and members who can attend are able to exercise their full voting and membership rights. Minutes of these meetings are kept and provided on this website in the Resource section.
Additionally, every other month our Executive Committee has teleconferences on the 4th Tuesday of each month. If you are a member, you are invited to listen in. Minutes of these meetings are also kept and provided on this website in the Resources section.
